Artist Statement
My art is Color, Space and the Id.
I don’t try to represent the material world, but that which
creates the material world. Nor do I try to capture a moment in
time, but that which transcends time. I’m not concerned with
transitory forms. I’m seeking sound that is born of color
and occupies space.
I paint to bring harmony and balance.
I was born in Armenia, a nation that in 301 A.D. formally adopted
Christianity – embracing Love as the guiding force for humankind.
I seek to express that Love in my art.
I seek God everywhere. In everything, in my act of painting, I see
God’s handiwork.
I often wonder where the impulse to paint comes from. I’m
compelled to paint. Perhaps I am a medium for things that need to
be said. And I have to work hard. My early training and exposure
to many artforms – sculpture, music, dance, choreography –
have largely determined my art. These are all just different means
of reaching the same end. I learned discipline, both physical and
mental, in ballet. There I also learned the art of composition and
the use of space.
Each day I work, I apply color, I fulfill my reason for being.
